چکیده

Anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing (Anammox) bacteria were enriched from sludge collected at a conventional activated sludge system treating domestic wastewater of Belo Horizonte(MG), Brazil, employing a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). After three months of cultivation, Anammox activity was detected in the system by the consumption of stoichiometric amounts of NO2 and NH4 +. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) results revealed the presence of Anammox bacteria (probably Candidatus Brocadia anammoxidans) and showed that they accounted for 53% of the total bacterial population (after 6 months of cultivation). The reactor performance during the seven months of operation showed a near perfect removal of nitrite, based on the influent NO2 --N concentration of 61-95 mg/L. The maximum ammonia removal efficiency was 95% from the influent N-NH4 + concentration of 55-82 mg/L.

Propionate oxidation by and methanol inhibition of anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is a recently discovered microbial pathway and a cost-effective way to remove ammonium from wastewater. Anammox bacteria have been described as obligate chemolithoautotrophs. However, many chemolithoautotrophs (i.e., nitrifiers) can use organic compounds as a supplementary carbon source. In this study, the effect of organic compounds on anammox bacteria wa...

Anammox enrichment and constructed wetland inoculation for improvement of wastewater treatment performance

This study contributes to the improvement of low-cost biotechnology for wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands (CWs). Constructed wetlands are energy efficient engineered systems that mimic the treatment processes of natural wetlands, removing polluting organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens from water. The aim of this study was to investigate the advisability of the inoculation of hori...

New anaerobic, ammonium-oxidizing community enriched from peat soil.

Anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing (anammox) bacteria have been recognized as an important sink for fixed nitrogen and are detected in many natural environments. However, their presence in terrestrial ecosystems has long been overlooked, and their contribution to the nitrogen cycling in natural and agricultural soils is currently unknown. Here we describe the enrichment and characterization of anammo...

Candidatus "Scalindua brodae", sp. nov., Candidatus "Scalindua wagneri", sp. nov., two new species of anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is both a promising process in wastewater treatment and a long overlooked microbial physiology that can contribute significantly to biological nitrogen cycling in the world's oceans. Anammox is mediated by a monophyletic group of bacteria that branches deeply in the Planctomycetales. Here we describe a new genus and species of anaerobic ammonium oxidizing ...

Global impact and application of the anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing (anammox) bacteria.

In the anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process, ammonia is oxidized with nitrite as primary electron acceptor under strictly anoxic conditions. The reaction is catalysed by a specialized group of planctomycete-like bacteria. These anammox bacteria use a complex reaction mechanism involving hydrazine as an intermediate. The reactions are assumed to be carried out in a unique prokaryotic o...
